Media Statement: A Dutton Coalition Government Will Boost Men’s Mental Health Support

The Coalition is proud to commit $32 million to help break the stigma around men’s mental health, including support to train over 60,000 GPs and nurses through the incredible work of Movember.

We want to ensure more men are supported and encouraged to access the support they need.

We will also build on our strong record on mental health to establish more men's sheds and more funding to boost community mental health initiatives, to ensure grassroots support is available when Australian men need it most.

Today's announcement builds upon our almost $1 billion mental health package, which includes important measures to double Medicare mental health sessions through the Better Access Initiative, to establish and upgrade headspace centres across the country, and to deliver a world-leading focus on youth mental health.

The Coalition has also committed $15 million to continue the National Suicide Prevention Research Fund, which is supporting critical research into men’s mental health, after it was disgracefully cut by the Albanese Labor Government.

It is a devastating statistic that of the 3,000 lives tragically lost to suicide every year in Australia, approximately 75% are men.

We will restore mental health and suicide prevention as a national priority, and continue the important work towards zero suicides in Australia – which is the only acceptable goal.
