I will visit Durban, South Africa, from 1 - 2 November to attend the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Council of Ministers’ Meeting.
Comprising of 21 member states, IORA is the peak ministerial-level forum for the Indian Ocean region and plays a vital role in strengthening regional economic cooperation.
As an Indian Ocean nation, the peaceful and stable development of the region is crucial to our national security and prosperity.
Australia is a founding member of IORA, and was Chair between 2013 and 2015.
During the meetings we will discuss maritime safety and security, the Blue Economy, and dismantling barriers to women’s economic participation.
I will also announce the Australian Government’s commitment of $750,000 over three years to support the UN Women’s work to promote the economic empowerment of women in IORA member states.
While in South Africa, I will take the opportunity to meet with Australia Awards alumni, Australian volunteers, and organisations that receive funding through Australia’s Direct Aid Program.
