Media Release: Responsible management of Southern Bluefin Tuna

The Australian Government's unwavering objective is to ensure the continued rebuilding of the Southern Bluefin Tuna (SBT) stock and to minimise the wastage of caught fish, according to Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Anne Ruston.

"As VRFish would be aware, we have repeatedly stated that the national survey of the recreational catch will commence in December," Minister Ruston said.

"No decisions have been taken about the future management of recreational catch of SBT.

"The results of the survey of recreational catch will inform future management arrangements for this iconic fish.

"Responsible, equitable and harmonised management of recreational catch of SBT across all states is our primary goal.

"I want all recreational fishers to be able to enjoy the thrill of catching this iconic species no matter where they live or holiday in southern Australia.

"With the support of state governments, the rebuilding of the single, shared stock of SBT is the only way to achieve this outcome."
