Young women from regional areas will be given the opportunity to network with political and corporate leaders in Canberra today as part of the Country to Canberra initiative.
Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Senator Anne Ruston, said 15 students from across Australia had been selected from a pool of over 200 applicants to join this year’s Country to Canberra’s flagship program, ‘Power Trip.’
“Now in its fourth year, Country to Canberra is a not-for-profit organisation which empowers year 10 to 12 students from rural areas to overcome a range of roadblocks to reach their full leadership potential,” Minister Ruston said.
“Country to Canberra is committed to addressing this imbalance, to ensure young women have access to mentors, who can provide guidance beyond the length of the program.
“By offering young women goalsetting training and links to influential leaders and mentors, the program is supporting rural students to achieve their career goals, with the added flow-on benefit of strengthening their regional communities.
“Today’s events will be an opportunity for this year’s round of successful applicants to network with senior public service staff, and learn about the variety of employment opportunities available in both the public and private sectors in Canberra.
“As a country girl myself this is an initiative close to my heart.”
Among other activities the students will attend a Powerful Women’s Breakfast, a parliamentary luncheon and a dinner hosted by the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources in addition to viewing question time and meeting with Foreign Minister the Hon. Julie Bishop MP.
