Media Release: Supporting South Australians affected by bushfires

As of this morning South Australians devastated by bushfires in the local government areas of the Adelaide Hills, City of Playford and Lower Eyre Peninsula can access one-off payments of $1000 per adult and $400 per child.

The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment is available for people whose home has been severely damaged or destroyed as well as those people who have been seriously injured or who have lost a family member.

South Australians impacted by fires in other parts of the state can register for payments with Services Australia which will then be processed pending disaster declarations in their district.

Minister for Families and Social Services and Senator for South Australia Anne Ruston urged anyone who believes they would be eligible for a payment to contact Services Australia for support.

“People have until 20 June 2020 to make a claim, however, Services Australia’s 180 22 66 phone line is the fastest way to claim urgent financial assistance,” Minister Ruston said.

“These are incredibly difficult times for many families. We’re here to help.”

Those in disaster declared areas can also use the 180 22 66 phone line for support with other Services Australia matters including replacement Medicare cards.

Over the Christmas/New Year period – from 19 December 2019 to 1 January 2020 – all welfare recipients are not required to meet their mutual obligations.
