Media Release: 70% of Labor's Legislation Goes Unscrutinised

The report card for the Albanese Government’s 2024 legislative agenda is in, and it is a fail.

The Government has scrapped scrutiny in the Parliament, choosing instead to ram through its bills without any consideration or debate.

Prior to the last sitting week, of the 99 Government Bills that passed the Parliament in total this year, 69 were guillotined by the Government.

Then, last week, they forced another 32 bills through the Senate without debate.

Over 70% of the Government’s bills this year have gone without the scrutiny of the Parliament.

Manager of Opposition Business in the Senate, Senator Anne Ruston said that this is the behaviour of a government in chaos.

“The Government’s approach to the Senate last week was like a closing down sale,” Senator Ruston said.

“This government has achieved very little all year, and then were forced into legislation panic mode at the last hour.

“In doing so, they shoved significant pieces of legislation through the Parliament with no debate or scrutiny, in complete disregard for transparency, accountability or proper process.

“This was just further proof that Labor does not care about being a responsible government, and they are only in it for themselves.”

Labor promised Australians it would be a government of transparency, accountability and proper process. This is another example of Labor’s broken promises to the Australian people.
