Horticulture sector independent review released

The Turnbull Government has today released the independent review of the Horticulture Code of Conduct, which identifies key areas of improvement ahead of a new Code.

Minister for Small Business and Assistant Treasurer, Kelly O'Dwyer and Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Senator Anne Ruston, said the government would now consider the review's 13 recommendations. 

"These recommendations seek to strengthen the transparency of transactions between growers and traders of fresh fruit and vegetables," Minister Ruston said. 

"It's been nine years since the code was introduced, and the review provided a variety of participants across the supply chain to have their views heard. 

"Our horticulture industry generates billions of dollars for the Australian economy each year, and the Code aims to enhance the welfare of Australians through the promotion of competition and fair trading and provision for consumer protection. 

"The government will look closely at the recommendations and consult further before making any decisions about the future of the Code. 

"This is a positive step towards a competitive and transparent industry." Minister Ruston said. 

Minister O'Dwyer said in considering its response, the government wants to strike a balance between regulating the horticulture sector and giving growers and traders the freedom to run their businesses effectively, efficiently and successfully. 

"The Government is committed to encouraging growth and jobs in our economy." 

The Government would like to thank Mr Mark Napper and Mr Alan Wein for undertaking this independent review.
